When you first open an app, nothing is worse than having no direction. When Robert Half asked us to design an empty state for their home screen we saw it as an opportunity to do more than just a simple illustration. Their users came from different backgrounds — some had resumes already included, some a blank slate, some came from recruiters and some came from direct account creation.

The Solution

We suggested using logic to help initiate user action. The result was four different empty home states based on existing data. If the user had saved jobs, they would see a list of those jobs to apply for. If they had allowed location services, they would see jobs near them. Recent jobs would show jobs recently viewed, and similar jobs would show jobs similar to ones they've already applied for. The animations were broken up into two separate JSON files — one for the draw in animation and one that looped the animation while the user was on the screen. Our solution increased job applications across the app with this logic-based method.
